Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone

Great Price "Head First iPhone Development: A Learner's Guide to Creating Objective-C Applications for the iPhone" for $25.56 Today

I found this book to be a really fun way to learn iPhone development. I started trying to comb through Apple's boring documentation and then came across this book. The book takes a great approach to excercises by always starting with the business problem. But these problems aren't boring problems either. It starts out making a Twitter client! As the book goes on, you'll find yourself diving into other business problems that result in really getting a good feel for the iPhone's features including location and images.

My only complaints about this book is that as a Java developer, I didn't feel like it explained some of the Objective C that was going on as fully as I would have liked. However, after digging into an Objective C book after completing this one, I've found that what it's lacking really isn't that much. If I could rate this 4.5 stars only for that fact, I would have. I definitely think that this is a close to five star book if you're looking to start learning iPhone app development, but it's definitely higher than a four star book.

One other suggestion for the authors is that when they update this for iPhone OS4.0, include user coding exercises at the end of the chapter to reinforce the exercises in the chapter.

Was not what I wanted - Robert Cook - California, United States
I respect their attempts to create an engaging book, however the content is probably not going to appeal to you unless you are younger or have serious ADD (Not saying with any insulting tone).

I personally haven't finished it because it was also not what I was looking for because it started off too much into NIBS and UIBuilder. I was starting at Apple when I purchased it and had to find a better Objective C book.

More like "Beat Your Head First" iPhone Development - Art Vandelay -
This book is very sloppily conceived, written, and edited. In a addition to the many typos and omissions that other readers have noted, there are numerous terms used that are never defined. Often the writers will employ multiple undefined terms for the same feature or function, creating further confusion. Overall, the grammar and style is often imprecise, to the point where it often becomes difficult to interpret exactly what the authors mean. The book needs a complete re-edit, by someone who is actually paying attention to the material (and "keystroking" the procedures to ensure that the text actually makes sense). Are all O'Reilly books this poorly presented?

iPad Programming Overviews

Hold an iPad in your hands and you'll know what the fuss is all about. Select an app and the device disappears as you find yourself immersed in the experience--the iPad defines a new category for devices. iPad Programming shows you how to build apps for the iPad that people will love to use.

This quick-start guide will have you writing iPad apps right away using a combination of the familiar iPhone APIs along with the new APIs and additional templates designed specifically for creating iPad applications.

The iPad has a display that's more than seven times as big as the iPhone. The metaphors are different; the application design is different. Users will be able to interact with your iPad app in new ways. In this book you'll learn to take advantage or the additional real estate and functionality.

Every time you turn around it seems as if there's another ten thousand apps added to the App Store for the iPhone. If you're building iPad-specific apps, it's a brand new day with plenty of opportunity. In this book we don't just teach you to write apps that run on an iPad, we teach you to create apps that delight users because they wouldn't make sense running on any other device.

iPhone Objective-C 2.0 Programming Exercises 2nd Edition

Great Price "iPhone Objective-C 2.0 Programming Exercises 2nd Edition" Today

Price : $4.95

iPhone Objective-C 2.0 Programming Exercises 2nd Edition Overviews

This 2nd Edition of these popular iPhone Objective-C 2.0 exercises are for you if you are either a newbie or an expert iPhone Objective-C 2.0 software developer, and you need to learn, practice, and improve your iPhone Objective-C 2.0 software development skills.

The approach taken here is unique. Every exercise focuses on a key and important skill. Using a clear, step-by-step writing style, each exercise shows the exact code you need to enter. The exercises were written for use with Xcode, the Objective-C 2.0 development tool included with the iPhone OS SDK.

Unlike books that focus on Mac OS X Objective-C 2.0, the exercises in this book were written from scratch to focus on iPhone Objective-C 2.0 programming.

NOTE: The 1st Edition of these exercises did everything from the command-line. This 2nd Edition now does everything using the Xcode development tool that is included with the iPhone OS SDK.

The only prerequisite for these exercises is an eagerness to learn. While it helps to have a background in object-oriented programming, that is not a requirement. The exercises explain new concepts when they are needed, in a step-by-step, easy-to-understand, manner.

If you are an existing C/C++, C#, Flash, Java, PHP, Python, Ruby or similar developer, then you'll enjoy how Objective-C 2.0 handles object-oriented programming. Objective-C was influenced by SmallTalk, one of the early object-oriented programming languages. In turn, Objective-C influenced the Java language designers, which in turn influenced the C# language designers.

iPhone OS uses Objective-C 2.0 as it's programming language, which is a superset of the C programming language. As you work through these exercises, the Objective-C 2.0 concepts will be covered as you come to them. It's OK if you do not have experience with Objective-C 2.0; just start Exercise 1 and work your way forward.

If you have access to a Mac OS X system, along with the iPhone OS SDK (Software Developers Kit), then you can read each exercise, and perform each step, using the iPhone OS SDK.

However, even if you do not have a Mac OS X system with the iPhone OS SDK, you can still read and follow along "in your mind". When you do have access to a Mac, you'll know exactly what to do.

Programming in Objective-C 2.0 LiveLessons Bundle

Great Price "Programming in Objective-C 2.0 LiveLessons Bundle" for $44.09 Today

I really like this book as an introduction into the Objective C language and quite frankly into the world of programming in general. The examples in the book are lucid which to me is the most critical part of any computer science book. The examples are also extended throughout the book which is nice because you have the ability to reuse the programs you create to further expand your understanding of the concepts. The book also does a good job explaining general object-oriented principles such as information hiding, polymorphism, dynamic binding, inheritance, dynamic typing etc. I would definitely recommend this book to either anyone interested in learning Objective-C from the ground floor or anyone looking to get a ground floor look at Object Oriented programming through a specific language. The book is more catered to the former than the later but if you are looking for both than this is certainly the book for you.

I am a graduate student in software engineering so I have come accross a lot of books on various subjects and this is certainly one worth buying.

Some times a video is better - Barry Johnson - Sunnyvale, Ca USA
I was hoping this DVD would be available alone since I had already bought the book.
But I let someone else have the copy so not a big deal.
Video is one way I feel that amplifies my learning process.
I consider both very helpful and do think that some other authors should try this for new material.
I am hoping that volume 2 is just as helpful.
I do recommend this for new users to programming and new to Objective C.

Only one major flaw... - T. Berarducci - Granite Bay, CA
I really like this bundle. Yes, as some reviewers have pointed out there are some parts that seem amateurish. It looks like it was filmed in the author's bedroom. Not much production flash. But who the heck cares? If you want to learn how to program in Objective C 2.0, and that is all you care about, then I suggest you get this bundle.

My only warning is that the video DVD that comes with it is aptly named "PART ONE" because it only covers half of the book. I actually did not have a problem with this because I assumed if I liked the DVD I would be given the opportunity to purchase Part Two. NOPE. There is NO PART TWO. So if you like Part One you are out of luck. You have been warned.

Beginning iPhone SDK Programming with Objective-C (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)

Great Price "Beginning iPhone SDK Programming with Objective-C (Wrox Programmer to Programmer)" for $20.89 Today

I read a few iPhone SDK programming books and never get to learn much because they were hard to understand for a newbie like me. To make matter worst, I am not able to develop real world applications without resorting to read and learn the video samples from Apple and other SDK sites.

I am glad that I found this book simply because it is very easy to follow. I didn't struggle as much compared to reading other iPhone dev books. The walkthrough exercises were great! The author go straight to the point and I don't have to read tons of unnecessary info before starting on the exercises. The walkthrough exercises help me to understand the concept and most importantly, I am able to develop different kinds of practical iPhone applications upon completion of each chapter. This book also covers a wide range of different topics ranging from MultiTouch, database access, debugging and simple animations.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to jump right into the iPhone programming bandwagon but don't have a clue about Objective C or the iPhone SDK.
Thumbs up !!!

Out of date, and no support! - Arnold Miller - Tucson, AZ
This book, despite its late publication date, is out of date!
It's written for 3.0 instead of 3.2.x.
I down loaded there source code for the first chapter. It consisted of a completely empty project.
No added code, events or actions.

I wish I could return it, but I ordered the Kindle version.

makes sense - Y. Dolinsky - San Francisco, CA United States
If you are a developer and want to learn iPhone SDK, this is a book for you. Instead of teaching you how to use all kinds of tables and other UI Classes exclusively in InterfaceBuilder this book does a great job of explaining how it actually works if you just use code to create your classes. I also liked how the chapters are grouped to walk you through SDK. And App. D about Objective-C is pretty good too.
This book has one problem, which every printed material is prone to have- a few screen shots are out of date, but nothing you can't figure by google the information.

Cocoa Programming: A Quick-Start Guide for Developers

Great Price "Cocoa Programming: A Quick-Start Guide for Developers" for $20.66 Today

In my opinion this is a great book for beginners in Cocoa. The author conceptually explains the framework for Cocoa Programming (that is to me more useful then just a programming recipe book). Yes, there are a lot of recipe like books out there for iPhone and Mac programming, but if you really want to learn how things work, this book actually will help fill in the details for you. For example this book really explains 'delegates' and 'first responder' concepts in more plain language to me then other sources I used . Also, in the recent update to the book, the author covers new and important concepts with 'blocks' and 'grand central dispatch' which are new to snow leopard. The book is a big time saver and the price was very affordable (the last I checked) .

Well thought out and not rushed - Brad Hutchins -
Pragmatic has done it again. They once more found an author to truly tackle this ever growing important subject. Cocoa Programming, and not just on the Mac but touches on the iPhone and iPad a bit. Everything is clear and concise and easy to follow. Objective-C can be a bit daunting, but not at the fault of the author just the nature of the beast. But once you get familiar with the language idioms. Things start to fall into place and you just start to get it.

Great modern introduction to Cocoa - Juio E. Barros -
This is a great modern introduction to Cocoa Programming. It covers a lot of topics and really helps you get the idea behind the design decisions of the apis. It is a great overview of the many important aspects of programming for the Mac desktop.

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK

Great Price "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK" for $19.00 Today

Every other iphone book out there sticks to teaching the use of Interface Builder everytime you work on the GUI side of you app. That's totally insane.

I bought this book, made it 4 chapters in and thought I wasted my money. I bought another book and a couple months in realized that all I learned was interface builder and how to make the most basic apps possible. I've gone back to this book and realized it was the only one I needed.

Do not waste your time with making interface builder apps unless you are not a programmer or you are just looking to make a simple app over the weekend and probably never publish it.

This book separates the real programmers from the people who pickup an IDE and think they can code because they can drag and drop GUI components.

I would rather not have any books than not have this book. I would recommend buying it with the Learning Objective c book (from the same publisher) if you are new to the language. I find that it is not as simple to pickup as C++, Java or C# because the syntax is sort of odd. The learning objective c book will help with that.

If you are a good programmer, are new to iphone development, are capable of making really good software and want to create complex apps, this is the only book you will need.

If you are not a programmer (either literally or just think you are a programmer but really are not), are new to iphone and have never written software (on your own without using Google to find all your source code), go get one of the other books that teach drag and drop interface building, you will be lost with this book.

Customer Review

Definitely NOT helpful for new iPhone developers. - software developer -
This book is very frustrating, and an immense disappointment. Despite my 40 years of software development on other platforms, this book is woefully inadequate at helping someone new to iPhone development. Unclear documentation, poorly laid out source code (Ms. Sadun admits that it's done this way for ease of book publishing, not for the user of the book). Downloading the code itself is an exercise in frustration, requiring that you set up other tools (without any documentation) just to be able to download. If you bother to compile the examples, every one has the same name, so you are left with a mess to separate and cleanup, both on your mac and on the iPhone. The author gives you a website if you have any questions, but totally fails to answer a single question or provide any help whatsoever.

Perhaps if you are already a very experienced iPhone developer you can gain some useful kernels of wisdom from this book, but otherwise it's useless. Stay away!
